Dar
es Salaam — Over 12,000 Standard Seven pupils who passed the national
examinations but were not selected to join Form One in Dar es Salaam for
the year 2016 will start the secondary level of education as schools
open, the government has said.
About 12,225 students could not be selected because shortage of classrooms and other teaching materials.
Speaking to
journalists yesterday, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Said Meck
Sadick said the classroom shortage problem has been solved and in a
week's time new names for selected would be released.
He urged parents to
ensure all students are joining school without excuses as it is free.
Some 4, 707 candidates were not selected in Temeke District alone while
2, 365 were left out in Ilala District and in Kinondoni District 3, 183
were not selected.
"The classrooms are
set to be finished soon...all the students will be allocated to
schools. This is to ensure that no student who has passed exams is left
behind. I urge them to study hard.
"Parents should
also take this advantage of this opportunity because school costs have
been cut down. There is no excuse for a child to stay at home," he said.
The first selection
that was released in December saw 503,914 out of 518,034 students who
passed the exam selected to join Form One in various schools in the
country, leaving the 12,000 students with no option.
In implementing the
free education, the government has set aside Sh18.77 billion to fund
all school expenses from primary school to Form Four level that will
include food for boarding schools and fee starting this January.
