Shenzhen, China. June 2016.
Students from local universities in Tanzania who were in China
attending training on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
have commended Huawei Tanzania for initiating a project that aims to develop
ICT talent in the country, promote a greater understanding of the
telecommunications sector and encourage participation in the
international ICT community.
Speaking
during the ‘Seeds for the Future’ graduation ceremony held over the
weekend at Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen-China, students recognized
Huawei’s efforts in raising the bar for ICT development in Tanzania.
One of the students from State University of Zanzibar (SUZA) Ahmed Sufiani Makame (22) said, The
program has exposed them to the latest technologies that they couldn’t
have experienced at the University or anywhere in Tanzania, giving them
enough exposure to face challenges in the Industry when they are
employed later on.
“In this 21st century employers
look for more than just academic excellence. They want their employees
to have skills and the right attitude. I am thankful to Huawei for
giving us the opportunity to discover a different side of the technology
industry”
He
said that due to the training they acquired in China, they are now well
equipped with skills and are ready to face the challenges in most of
telecom companies in the country.
He
said that through e-learning, security, smart homes, networking, 3G,
4G, cloud computing, smart cities and e-governments even the e-hospitals
among others are things that would make Tanzania be one of the
countries developed in ICT field.
“During
our tour in China, we were able to see how Huawei is focused with
innovation as they say a better connected world, the training we
received has put us on the right track to advice telecom companies or
even the government on the advancement of our technology to cope with
global standards,” he said.
He
said that acquiring some hands on skills by getting the 3G and 4G
network voice service experience and the software used for monitoring
and maintenance and also configuration for the three services HSI, VoIP
and IPTV, not only learning things theoretically but putting the
knowledge into practice.
According to Jimmy Liguo, the Huawei Tanzania Public relations Manager, Seeds
for the Future’ program is Huawei’s global CSR flagship program. The
program is Huawei’s most heavily invested CSR activity, and the company
will continue to invest in the program over the long term.
“The
program was initiated by Huawei in 2008, and seeks to develop local ICT
talent, enhance knowledge transfer, promote a greater understanding and
interest in the telecommunications sector, improve and encourage
regional building and participation in the digital community,” he said.
In
2008, Huawei launched the program to nurture professionals who are
urgently needed to drive the development of the ICT industry in
countries where it operates. The company seeks to close the gap between
knowledge learned in the classroom and the skills required by the
industry, and enhance knowledge transfer.
According
to him, in many countries, there is a gap between the knowledge learned
in the classroom and the skills that are necessary in the real world.
Therefore, the pool of skilled personnel should be provided
opportunities to learn and apply the latest technologies. Through the
‘Seeds for the Future’ program, Huawei helps resolve this problem.
