GEITA
Region raised 1.7bn/- (approximately 790,950 US dollars) at a
fundraising event recently for school desks to help in bridging huge
deficit of school desks at the region.
The
amount raised was enough for purchasing 23,200 desks at an average
price of 75,000/- each which will cover approximately 34 per cent of the
total deficit of school desks in the region, according to a statement.
The
statement further said Geita Gold Mine contributed 444m/- enough for
6,000 desks which makes a 25 per cent of the total contributions made.
Speaking about the donation, GGM Managing Director Mr Terry Mulpeter
said as a responsible corporate citizen, GGM believe that education is
key in enabling a significant economic contribution to Geita and its
impact in social welfare.
GGM
has contributed to other School facilities such as the construction of
Nyankumbu Girls School, whereby we have invested over 10bn/- whereby
more than 800 girls student competes for science education, he said
noting that the school has all lab facilities, teachers housing and
playing grounds.
“GGM
believes that positive social and economic development of our region
and country is a result of good investment in education,” he said.
“GGM
believes that education is a human right. And, like other human rights,
it cannot be taken for granted. Due to un-conducive learning
environment, there is a number of children who do not complete primary
or secondary education.
Behind
these reasons, children and youth misses opportunities to get decent
jobs, escape poverty, to support their families, and to develop their
communities.”
Mr
Mulpeter said GGM was proud to be working with the government and
pledged to continue supporting authorities to improve the quality of
education, in which in return will improve the social and economic
aspects of our neighbors and communities around Geita and the country at
 large.
