THE Zanzibar government has asked former First
Vice President and main opposition Civic United Front (CUF) Secretary
General, Seif Sharif Hamad to go to court and seek interpretation of the
law with regards to his claims of illegibility of the current
government.

The
call was made yesterday in an interview with the State Minister (Second
Vice President’s Office), Mohamed Aboud Mohamed who reacted to claims
by CUF over the illegibility of the present government and Dr Ali
Mohamed Shein’s status as president.
CUF, which boycotted the re-run polls conducted on March 20, still insists on not recognising Dr Shein and his government, accusing them of undermining democracy.
Mohamed called on Hamad to file a case at the court rather than stressing that the present government is illegal and has violated the 1984 Constitution.
“Hamad should go to court to seek for proper law interpretation over the illegibility of the present government rather than quoting a few sections of the Isles’ constitution,” he said.
The re-run polls saw Dr Ali Mohamed Shein being re-elected to serve his second and last term with an overwhelming 91.4 percent of the vote while all the 54 constituencies in both Unguja and Pemba islands went to the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
Last year in October, Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairman, Jecha Salim Jecha annulled the election results on grounds of irregularities.
